History
The Wainuiomata Marae was initiated by Maori Whanau who migrated to Te Awakairangi during the urban drift. These Whanau wanted a place in which they could maintain Tikanga practices from their Whanau, Hapu and Iwi to support Tangihanga while providing a resource for the community.
The Wainuiomata Marae is just off the parkway extension in Wainuiomata and is made up of the following:
Te Puna O Te Ora (The Spring Of Life) Whare Kai opened 15th October 1983 by the late Ruka Broughton (Seating 300-350).
Pukeatua (The Surrounding hills that protect the Valley) Wharenui opened 10th September 1998 by the late Anglican Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. Whakahuihui Vercoe.
Wainuiomata Marae in the 1980s.
